Hello all. Can someone give me the exact definition of a Te interface please?

What does the T & the E stand for ?

is the T for twisted? & is the E for extended ?

When you see port number Te1/0/1 etc ?

It just tells you the type of port it is just like all the others it is just like an abbreviation type thing.

Fa = FastEthernet

Gi = GigabitEthernet

Te = TenGigabitEthernet

Hope that helps

TenGigabitEthernet on the same lines as GigabitEthernet and (younger readers pay attention) FastEthernet.

A TenGigabitEthernet interface may contain a module that is only capable of 1G or 100M but the physical slot is still named TenGigabitEthernet

You can verify this on the device by issuing:

show int Te<TAB>

and it will autocomplete to TenGigabitEthernet.

So a Te interface is essentially a Cage (empty ) until some form of module/sfp is added which will define the size ie 1g 10g etc?

TengigabitEthernet - again this depends on the model of the switch  it can be multigig port or Ethernet or SFP.

So if it's an empty slot waiting for a module/sfp it could be a multitude of speeds yes?
Thanks.

If it's empty it will be no speed (because it's empty) - if you put a 1G-capable module in, then the speed will be 1G (but the interface will still be called TenGigabitEthernetx/x/x.

Here are a set of my Te interfaces - from show interface status - as you can read - there are 1000BaseSX SFP (1G), 10G-SR (10G) and even a GLC-TE running at 100M there... all called Te1/0/xx

Te1/0/28 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx connected trunk full 1000 1000BaseSX SFP
Te1/0/29 disabled 999 auto auto unknown
Te1/0/30  xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx    connected    trunk        full    10G SFP-10GBase-SR
Te1/0/31  xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |  connected    trunk        full    10G SFP-10GBase-SR
Te1/0/32 disabled 999 auto auto unknown
Te1/0/33 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx connected trunk full 100 10/100/1000BaseTX SFP

It just tells you the type of port it is just like all the others it is just like an abbreviation type thing.

Fa = FastEthernet

Gi = GigabitEthernet

Te = TenGigabitEthernet

Hope that helps
