TFTP (Illegal protocol operation)

Peter Miller

Hello all,

I have been working with FreeNAS to do my TFTP service for me and it has worked great for the most part.  I do config backups after every change to the server just fine and sometimes in reverse, but the other day I was going a IOS upgrade from it to the router and it gives me this error after a few minutes into the transfer:

Destination filename [c2800nm-adventerprisek9_ivs_li-mz.151-3.T.bin]?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

%Error writing tftp://<IP_ADDRESS>/c2800nm-adventerprisek9_ivs_li-mz.151-3.T.bin (Illegal protocol operation).....

I cannot understand why it would fail at this point the server has plenty of room and has worked in the past. This error happens both in downloading and uploading IOS images.  I eventually used my trusty TFTP32d and it worked, but this server should work fine.

Anyone have an idea what it is erroring on?

Thank you in advanced

HI Peter,

May be its due to the large files.

1. images do not support more than 16MB in size for Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP).

Its better to use FTP.

here is the method about how to use:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/ts/fn/100/fn13026.html

or

Is it possible to try the operation using ftp? See this:

Hi Peter,

I am not sure about this problem but still you can try this:

Put TFTP in ASCII mode and 2nd time switch to Binary mode.

Try with both mode.

May be it helps.
