Hello Guys,
I really wanted to know the right answer on this question,
How does a router handle an incoming packet whose destination network is missing in the routing table?
A. It discards the packet
B. It Broadcast the packet to each network on the router
C. It Routes the packet to the default router
D. It Broadcast the packet to each interface on the router.
For what I know,
The answer should be A since there is nothing mentioned about having a default route on the routing table.
So the packet should be discarded by the router. Plus, default route is added manually in the router.
However, I saw few people saying that the correct answer is C.
Please help me clear out this question with the right answer.
Thanks!

A----> B
Let's say A is hit with some packets for unknown destination. There are two possibility.
1/ If A has no idea about destination and default route is in routing table pointing to B then it will route packet to B
2/ If A has no idea about destination and default route not there B then it will discard packet.
2.1 If A has route pointing toward NULL0 then too it will discard packet: The reason I wrote this option assuming devices behind A come to know about that specific destination via. some dynamic protocol and this null0 is propogated through this dynamic protocol.
Rest all scenario you know well.

Mahesh

Hello Georg and Magohil
Thanks a lot for helping me figure out this one.
Ill go stick with A as the router should do for this scenario.

I just read over this scenario, and I ran into a question that seems similar. How would you go about answering the following:
Q: If a route is not present in the routing table for a particular destination, what would the router do?
Would the router drop the packet or send it to the default route? Any information would be useful, and thank you.
