Trunk Port DHCP

Hi all, I am in the process of moving all our Cisco FlexConnect Access points into another vlan. Currently, they are in the same as the switches.

Th4e current setup we have is the AP is plugged into a cisco 3650 configured on a trunk port. It gets it's IP via DHCP from default vlan1 with ip address helper command.

My question is, Is there a way, interface level or switch level, to assign a trunk port to another vlan? Or do trunk ports always go to default vlan?

Anyone recommend another practice without changing default vlans?

Thank You in advanced

Yes from AP cli if it autonomous or from WLC if it controls by WLC.

So I would need to hit each AP? I wanted to restart by site, and have them grab IP via DHCP to new vlan scope.

Did you control AP by wlc?

MHM

WLC. But the Access point gets its IP from the Switch not the WLC

Yes I know but WLC push config to AP which then AP use it.

In wlc we can config AP to use specific vlan for connect to SW.

What is wlc platform you use 5000 series or 9800 series?

MHM

Ahh I see. We are using the 9800. That's great!

Thank you very much. I will try that

If the AP are in same VLAN it use broadcast and join WLC

if the AP are in different VLAN - you can use DHCP Option 43 for the AP to join WLC

check some good guide how AP join process with WLC :

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/catalyst-9120axe-access-point/221056-understand-the-ap-join-process-with-the.html

You can calculate  WLC IP to Hex for the DHCP Option 43 :

good tool i use always :

Thank you. I did this and removed the 43 option from the old scope. but it is still getting the old IP from windows dhcp server. I created new scope and used the option 43 for that one and it still goes to old scope
