Unable to enter switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q

Hi All,

We have cisco 6506 switch, I made the port as switchport

I couldnt enter switchport trunk encap dot1q

after entring switchport trunk ?

I could see allow, pruning etc but not the encapsulation

The switchport is made as trunk and operating properly

Just wondering why I am not able to enter the encapsulation

The switch is running Cisco IOS 12.2 (17r)SX7

Hello Chandru,

If the command switchport trunk encapsulation is not available then the switch does not support various encapsulation methods, and hence, there is nothing to configure about the encapsulation. In most cases, the switch then supports only IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging (as opposed to Cisco's proprietary ISL). This is normal - just make sure that the neighboring switch uses the same encapsulation method.
