Hi,
I need to upgrade IOS on two cisco WS-C6506-E which are now running IOS version s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXH4.bin. Both switches have a FWSM module and one of them it also has a NAM module. I enclosed the list of modules.
Based on the name of the IOS that it is now installed on my devices I think I could upgrade to the latest version: s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXJ10.bin. However, I have a few doubts:
- Can I upgrade directly from the IOS version that I have now to the latest one?
- Is s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXJ10.bin the IOS version I should upgrade to?
- If I upgrade IOS, do I need to upgrade FWSM and NAM software?
- How long does it take a cisco WS-C6506-E to reboot?
Thanks in advance.

- Can I upgrade directly from the IOS version that I have now to the latest one?
Yes, normally with IOS devices they will allow you to jump from IOS to IOS regardless of what version you are on previously. It may give you a message regarding the configuration being saved on a different IOS version but in your case you should not get it since you are basically following what is considered the migration path which is 12.2SXJ. If you check on Cisco.com you would actually find all different jumps under the same tab.
- Is s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXJ10.bin the IOS version I should upgrade to?
If you are not looking to install new features or support a new card then yes. It looks like your main intention is to run some maintanance and get a more recent version, so yes that would be the path to go.
- If I upgrade IOS, do I need to upgrade FWSM and NAM software?
The cards and modules on routers and switches normally requires a minimum firmware to get up and running but if you are upgrading to a newer IOS on your platform you normally don't have to upgrade the cards if you are not looking for a new feature. Just look out for your WS-SVC-NAM-2 since it seems to be already EoL since last year.
- How long does it take a cisco WS-C6506-E to reboot?
This depends on different factors like the size of the configuration, the cards installed and features that it has to get up and running. In a general overview it would take about two or three minutes but I have seen devices taking five minutes but this was because of an incorect boot stament looking for an IOS in the wrong directory. So make sure you have yours pointing to the right directory.
