Hi,
I have bought 1841 router with the following version :
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cisco IOS Software, 1841 Software (C1841-IPBASE-M), Version 15.0(1)M4, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
Technical Support: http://www.cisco.com/techsupport
Copyright (c) 1986-2010 by Cisco Systems, Inc.
ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 12.4(13r)T, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
System returned to ROM by power-on
System image file is "flash:c1841-ipbase-mz.150-1.M4.bin"
Last reload type: Normal Reload
Cisco 1841 (revision 7.0) with 235520K/26624K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID FGL151422PH
2 FastEthernet interfaces
DRAM configuration is 64 bits wide with parity disabled.
191K bytes of NVRAM.
63808K bytes of ATA CompactFlash (Read/Write)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since the current IOS is IPBASE & I need to use VPN & SSH, thus i have been adviced that you must have some kind of "c1841-advipservicesk9-mz" IOS....Is it correct ... ?
If Yes, then how much it will cost to me? & can i download it directly from Cisco paying to cisco only.
Kindly advice...
Awaiting for your earlier reply,
Many thanks in advance...

Hi Vijay,
Sorry I didn't explain that very well. Each IOS has different features and the higher IOS images generally have all the features of the ones below IP Base being the lowest, the Advanced Security IOS for example has all the feature of IP BASE as well as Firewall, IDS, VPN etc. If SSH and VPNs are the only 2 additional features you needed then the Advanced Security IOS would be a good fit for you. You wouldn't be running two IOS' at the same time, you would normally replace IP BASE with Advanced Security, as Cadet Alain said you can have many IOS images on your flash and specify which one boots but only one would be used.
I have found a link which shows what I am trying to type above, it is a bit old but the concept is still good (for Version 12 of IOS anyway):
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/iosswrel/ps8802/ps5460/prod_bulletin09186a00801af451.html Have a look at figure 1 on this link.
Advanced IP Sevices has features like Voice, MPLS, ATM etc. A full list can be found on the feature navigator:
http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/index.jsp
I can't give you any pricing I'm afraid, you'd have to tap up a reseller for this however looking at the global list pricing Adv IP Services is: $1400 List price where as Adv Security is: $800 List price. Exact pricing will vary.
The Link for upgrading the IOS image on the 1800 series is:
This is taken from the 1800 Series Software Configuration Guide:
I hope this has been helpful. Sorry for the delay to this reply.

Tom

Hi Vijay,
Yes the Advanced IP Services will allow you to do VPNs and SSH.
In order to get hold of the new IOS you would need to purchase it from a Cisco reseller. I believe the part you require is: S184AISK9-12424T however just get them to check it when you purchase. They will be able to give you a price as well.
Once you have purchased it it should be sent to you on a CD, they may also be able to provide it to you on a FTP server as well. it all depends on the reseller.
On a side note, if it is just SSH and VPNs you want to do ontop of your IP Base image you could just go to Advanced Security instead, which would be cheaper than Advanced IP Services. PN - S184ASK9-12424T
I Hope this helps.

Tom

Hi Tom
Thanks for your prompt reply,
"On a side note, if it is just SSH and VPNs you want to do on top of your IP Base image........." pls explain?
Do you mean I would be copying this Advanced IOS image top on which i am using currently...meaning running two IOS in one router?..... as i know i need to remove the existing one & then i have to paste the new(Advanced Sec.) using TFTP....kindly clarify my doughts.
Also will SSH & VPN will work on Advanced Security...no need of Advance IP Service....am I right?
Second.... what is the core difference b/w Advance Security & Advanced IP Service...?
Would be great if you could just share the price you are getting in your place ...so i could expect a bit less or high....just for getting a figure...
Also kindly share the link for understanding how to upload a new IOS into router using TFTP & backing up the existing one,
Awaiting for your earlier reply,
Many thanks once again,

Hi,

for these 2 features you need a crypto image, so what's important for you is the k9.
as i know i need to remove the existing one & then i have to paste the new(Advanced Sec.) using TFTP....kindly clarify my doughts.
If you've got enough room in flash then you can put it as many IOS as you want and you'll decide which one to boot with the boot system command.
Also kindly share the link for understanding how to upload a new IOS into router using TFTP & backing up the existing one,
just do copy tftp://xxxxx flash: and then you'll be asked the ip address or hostname of tftp server, to confirm the name of the file and if you want to keep same name on your router.
For backing up this is just the opposite: copy flash:xxxx tftp or copy flash:xxxxx ftp

Alain.
