Upgrading Sup for 4510R

Hi there,

I have 4510R with a sup module WS-X4516 with 9 line card types (slot 2 is empty): WS-X4148-RJ, WS-X4548-GB-RJ45V, and WS-X4248-RJ45V.

I want to upgrade the sup from WS-X4516  to WS-X45-Sup6L-E to have 10G SFP uplinks!

Mod Ports Card Type Model
---+-----+--------------------------------------+---------
 1 2 Supervisor V 1000BaseX (GBIC) WS-X4516

Q1> Is the WS-X45-Sup6L-E support 4510R chassis? If so,

Q1-1> Shall I have the same IOS version of the old sup? to copy the configs to the new one

Q1-2> Shall I install a second power supply?

Q1-3> Shall I add a second power supply?

Q2>  if WS-X45-Sup6L-E does not support 4510R chassis, do these line-cards will support WS-X4606-X2-E or

        WS-X4712-SFP+E?

Otherwise, what is the recommendation to upgrade to 10G SFP ports?

You are correct. In order to use 7, 8, or 9 sups, you would need an E chassis. On the other hand, if you have the budget and since the 4500 series now is EOL, you may want to look at the new 9400 series as it the replacement for the 4500 series.

Hey, here you can find Catalyst 4500 Chassis Types and the supported SUPs:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-4500-series-switches/product_data_sheet0900aecd801792b1.html

For SUP5, currently recommended software is 15.0.2-SG11.
For SUP6L-E the current recommended software is 15.2.2E8.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi,

If you are planning to upgrade the sup, you may as well go with 8-e or 9-e. Sup 6 is very old. I have Sup 8-e in many 4510s and they work really well.

Here is the datasheet for 8 and 9-e

Thank you for the quick reply.

My determination is that non of the recommended sups will be compatible with 4510R chassis because these Sups required at least 4510R+E or 4510R-E chassis but not 4510R, did I miss something here?

 Any further recommendations, please?

See below

Supervisor Engine 8-E does not support non-E-Series chassis: 4503, 4506, 4507R, and 4510R.
Supervisor Engine 7-E does not support non-E-Series chassis: 4503, 4506, 4507R, and 4510R.
Supervisor Engine 7L-E does not support non-E-Series chassis: 4503, 4506, 4507R, and 4510R.
