Using ME-3600X-24CX-M for Campus LAN

Hello everyone,

I have a customer that is planning to have fibber from the aggregation layer to the access. He will be running 2 fibbers from 2 different TRs to the access switch.

I haven't been able to find a cost effective 24 1Gb port switch with + 2 10GB to distribution. The options that I have found are:

The ones that has the best price is the ME-3600X-24FS-M, but it is a MetroEthernet switch.

So my question here is, will this switch work like any other Catalyst switch? Can I do trunking, create VLANs, configure STP without any trouble? Or this is restricted to SP technology and won't work on my LAN with other Catalyst switches connected to?

Thanks for your help here.

Yes the ME3600 works like any other Catalyst switch - with one exception in your case - no VTP.  In a Service Provider environment it's not usually used and does not work on this platform.

You'll be able to get by with the METROIPACCESS license (if you don't need MPLS don't get the ADVMETRO license).  Optionally the 10G license as well if you need 10G.

Configuration of trunks and access ports can be done as per any other IOS switch, with the same commands, if need be.  In SP land we usually use Service Instances instead, but you can configure either way if you want.

The ME3600 will probably be a better performing switch than a 3750X on the basis of much bigger port buffers.  4500-X is nicer again if you can afford the $$$.

It maybe an "overkill" but have a look at the new 6807-X/6880-X & 6800IA switch combo.

Leo,

That is a total oversized switch. I need a 24 port switch with 24 SFPs 1 Gb + 2 10Gb uplinks, not that monstruosity.

LOL.  Told you it's an overkill.  The reason why I recommended you have a look is because it's going to be mainstream in the next few years.  But enough of that.

Are you going to do MLPS/VRF?
