vlan creation

hi,

what does happen behind the scene when a vlan is created in a switch ?

1) a CAM table is created for the vlan ? so in the internal storage is there one CAM table with a column vlan OR in the internal storage is there one CAM table for each vlan ?

2) an STP instance is created for the vlan ?

3) is there anything else ?

Do you have ressources to know what happens exactly ?

Thank you

Hello,

the output of 'show mac address-table' shows all MAC addresses for all VLANs. There is no separate per VLAN CAM. You can filter the output by specifying the VLAN, but the filter is still applied to the same output.

And indeed, each VLAN creates an STP instance.

sh mac address-table
10 facc.ea4a.bada DYNAMIC Gi0/0/1
20 fbcd.db5a.2aca DYNAMIC Gi0/0/1
30 ffcc.c4a2.4a8a DYNAMIC Gi0/0/1
