Vlan limit exceeds, any workaround to add further vlans ?

Hi Team,

As part of the acquisition, we are in the situation to completely change the vlan, IP address. Per new standard, we have to use ext vlan range also so planning to use vtp transparent, right now we have vtp server/client model (vtp v1&v2).

At very few sites, we still have lite switches which only supports upto 64 vlan and unfortunately we are already close to 60 and have to add about 20 vlan as per new segmentation.

Though the lite switch got about 60 vlan from vtp server, it uses only about 5-10. I am planning to make it as vtp transparent and reconfig the switch only with needed vlans (5-10). So i will have enough free vlan to create new vlans as per new segmentation plan. Does this idea work ? If it works, we will use it till the lite switches gets replaced

Hello,
Your idea will work.
The limit is relative to the total number of VLAN on your switch.
So you can (in order):

  • Configure VTP in mode transparent (no impact)
  • Remove unnecerrary VLANs coming from your VTP domain
  • Add the 20 new vlans
