Hello Experts,
I am in process of configuring a new switch L3 cisco 4948 10ge model and run the following conmands:
Interface VLAN 100
IP address 1.1.1.1/24
Interface VLAN 200
IP address 2.2.2.2/24
Please note there is no interface assigned to the above VLANS and I have created a trunk port which is allowing both 100 and 200 VLAN traffic that port is connected with ESX server but the VLAN status and protocol both in down state. Please suggest what could be an issue?
Thanks

Hi,
just configure the vlan on the switch so it is in the vlan database and then if STP is Forwarding for this vlan on the trunk your SVIs will come up.

You meant to say VLAN database -NO. Can't we create VLANs by using interface command? Is there any difference in both VLAN database and interface command?
Thanks

Hi,
no, to create a VLAN you must either create it with the vlan command or if the switch is in VTP server or transparent mode by issuing the switchport access vlan x command under an interface.

Hello there,
You need to have vlan and assign port to it, otherwise vlan will remain down.

There is VTP server configured in my scenario so I have to make VLANs by using VLAN command and after that the VLAN status will be up. Is it?
Please confirm.
Thanks

Hi Get,
I don't want to assign an interface to VLAN as I already stated in my question that the trunk port is created to allow both VLAN traffic. Won't this work?
Thanks

You can create vlan in server and assign port to it in switch. The switch port should be in UP state for vlan to come up.
