Hi all,
i need to configure 15 switches. 13 of them are access switches connecting to the rest 2 core switches with trunks .I want to use a vpms server so that there is a dynamic mapping of port to vlan, based on host's MAC. I have already a tftp server and i'm thinking of configuring a switch at the core layer as the vpms server.Cisco documentation (and conf. examples) says that the ASCII file on the tftp server contains the vlan NAMES.
DO the vlans NAMES and NUMBERS have to be configured on the switches or not?
THANKS IN ADVANCE

you can only configure a vlan name at VMPS file:
So you should use on the catalyst: set vlan name ...
So it means that you need VTP which means you need to configure the vlan name and number at the VTP server switch.

So, does this mean that i HAVE TO use VTP or is it possible alternatively configure vlan names and numbers manually on each switch?
Also, if i use VTP, does a vtp client with null vtp domain and dtp in "desirable mode" on a fe port, will operate properly when inserted into the domain with this fe port connected to a vtp server switch trunk port, also in "desirable mode"?
Thanks.

Hello,
you need to use VTP. In addition, ´the VTP management domain and the management VLAN of VMPS clients and the VMPS server must be the same´.
VTP domain ´NULL´ is just the default name and will work, as long as it is configured on all participating switches. Make sure you reset the VTP revision number on newly inserted switches (by setting the switch to transparent mode first and then to client mode, this resets the revision number to 0).
As for trunking, setting both sides to ´desirable´ will work fine. Here are the combinations that will result in a successfull channel:
Desirable -- Desirable
Desirable -- Auto
