VSS RP Active and Standby question

Hi All,

Just want to know, in normally, when two switch on VSS mode, should one RP on active and one RP on standby?

Can I have both RP on active status for handling routing ability while keeping the VSS on normal operation.

Hi,

No, in VSS both switches are logically one.  So, you have only one device to configure.

Think of configuring one device.

In a VSS system one switch handles the control plane element ie. STP at L2, routing table etc. at L3 but both switches can forward traffic.

So if you mean routing in terms of exchanging routes with other devices, building the routing table etc. then this is done by the active switch but if you mean routing in terms of L3 forwarding then this is done by both switches.

Thanks for your answer.

That mean the brain is one on Active switch. But on data plane, both switch can do it, right?

But I test VSS failover, power off the active switch. Although standby can take over the active role, but there are some loss of the packet

- for example (1) ping loss is 1~2 if failover occur. 

- for example (2) voice traffic packet loss is around 100.

How can I improve the convergence to reduce the packet loss when the failover occur?
