VSS/SSO NSF with BGP/EIGRP

Hi,

I have two 4500-Xs in VSS mode with SSO redundancy. NSF is active in EIGRP and BGP (graceful-restart).

The 4500-X are connected to an ASR 1004, should I also activate NSF on the EIGRP/BGP part in the ASR ?

What is good practice for NSF (SWITCH-ROUTER) ? Knowing that the ASR only has one RP card...

Thanks

Hello @MHM Cisco World

I use ASR1004 (RP2) with IOS asr1000rp2-adventerprisek9.03.16.10.S.155-3.S10-ext.b

Hello @sebastien3

Yes, it is generally recommended to enable NSF and SSO on both the switches and the router to ensure seamless and uninterrupted network operation during a switchover.

Enabling NSF on the EIGRP and BGP processes in the ASR 1004 will help to minimize traffic loss during a failover event. In particular, enabling graceful restart on the BGP process will help to maintain BGP sessions during a switchover.

However, it is important to note that enabling NSF on the ASR 1004 may not provide complete redundancy if the router only has a single RP card. In this case, the RP card will still be a single point of failure. It is therefore recommended to use a router with redundant RP cards or to consider deploying a backup router to ensure high availability and redundancy in the network.

Best regards

Ok that's what I thought too ! I will enable SSO/NSF on the ASR.

Of course you are right, it would be nice to have a second RP card.

That's why I'm asking about enabling SSO/NSF on an ASR with a single RP card with a dual 4500X SSO/NSF environment.

Hi,

NSF for EIGRP and BGP is a software function and should be enabled on both sides of the connection. For SSO, you need dual RPs but not for NSF.

Thanks ! Software Redundancy means HSRP/VRRP/... ?
