Hi Experts,,
If VTP is not running in a network , is there any problem in using VTP MODE OFF in the switches ? or still we should use VTP MODE TRANSPARENT.
thanks

Hi,
If you are not using VTP, you can simply use mode off. Transparent and off behave the same way:
Off (configurable only in CatOS switches)—In the three described modes, VTP advertisements are received and transmitted as soon as the switch enters the management domain state. In the VTP off mode, switches behave the same as in VTP transparent mode with the exception that VTP advertisements are not forwarded.

I have a 6504 (IOS) that I set to vtp mode off (don't need vtp), and after the reload it is automatically set to server.
Any idea please?

Hi,
Configuration is saved in NVRAM and should not change after a reload. Can you post the output of "sh ver"?

Thanks, don't have access to that, are you looking for something in particular?

Hi,
Yes, I am looking for the config-register info. It should be 0x2102.

it is that way.

Ok, than the config should stay the same no matter how many times you reboot the switch. It may also be a bug in the version of the software you are running.

Thanks.
Well a diff 6504 running the same IOS doesn't have this behavior...This one is connected to the network but there is no other switch there. The 1st one having the issue is connected to a network where there are other switches.
Still when you set it off, id should stay off regardless of other switches have the vtp set to, correct?

That is correct. Once you configure it and save it, it should not change regardless of how the other switches are configured.
