Well known, registered and Ephemeral ports

Hi all,

I understand that well known ports (0 - 1023) are reserved for well known or common services (such as http, smtp, etc) and I also understand that Ephemeral ports are short lived dynamic assignements typically used for specifying a source port but I want to make sure I understand what a registered port is.

My understanding a registered port is a port that falls outside of the other two ranges (well known and Ephemeral) and is typically used in-house if you were creating custom applications?  if this is correct I dont understand why these numbers would need to be registered with IANA (as it says companies should).

Thanks in advance!
