Hi,

I posted about this problem but didn't get the answer yet and will very appreciate if you can help me..

If I look at the mac address table, the ports says 'Router' (BOLD).

Why doesn't it show port such as g1/0 or g0/12..

What does that mean?

xx-2#sh ip arp 10.18.30.35
Protocol Address Age (min) Hardware Addr Type Interface
Internet 10.18.30.35 - 5c50.156a.8c00 ARPA Vlan848
xx2#
xx2#
xx-2#sh mac add add 5c50.156a.8c00

Legend: * - primary entry
age - seconds since last seen
n/a - not available
S - secure entry
R - router's gateway mac address entry
D - Duplicate mac address entry

Displaying entries from DFC linecard [2]:

vlan mac address type learn age ports
----+----+---------------+-------+-----+----------+-----------------------------
R 399 5c50.156a.8c00 static No - Router
R 300 5c50.156a.8c00 static No - Router

This output depends on the platform you are using. If a mac-address belongs to the router/switch itself (the device where you enter the command), then this mac address can be shown as "Router".

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

This is a core switch 6900. What do you mean by that if a mac-address belongs to the router/switch itself?

Let's assume that this is a vlan for data, and under a physical interface there is the vlan. If I do sh ip arp and the sh mad add add then the output for port will show the physical interface where the PC is connected to...

Yes, if you look at the mac-address of an end-system, you see the port that is used to reach that address. But do a "sh int vlan 399". You should see that this interface has the mac-address from your output. It doesn't belong to an end-system. It's one of the mac-addresses of your switch.

Karsten,

Thanks for your reply again!

Ok.. so why does the port appear as Router.... .T.T

The port is your SVI, and that is a routed interface => Router.
