Wifi Router connected (wired) to a SG200 18 Port for Internet sharing (what port to use?)

Hello,

I finally bought a SG200 18 Ports to my home network (yes I really wanted that LACP support for my NAS).

The question that I have is: To connect it to my Wifi router, can I use any of the switch ports? or should I use either Port 17 or 18 for the connection to the Wifi router?

Does it matter which port is it connected to? The reason I'm asking is that does the SG200 have any prioritization for other devices trying to use the Internet that will use the Wifi router as the gateway to the Internet ?

Example: If you have a PS4 connected to the SG200, is there any configuration that gives it a privileged connection between the SG200 and the Wifi router (wired) ? or nah! The sg200 is intelligent enough to create a dedicated link between the PS4 and the Port which the Wifi router is connected when the PS4 wants to connect to the Internet ?

Thank you,

yes, default configuration for all ports will try to select connected device which cannot guarantee 100% success. if you selected manually, you can select most suitable device type for port.

Hi there,

actually its no matter which port you connects the devices. all ports will work equally for any device. :)

if you want to provide internet only for PS4 device, you can create a separate VLAN for those devices.  if not, there is no need to have a prioritization due to this is only one switch.

Thank you Kasun,

I was messing around with a few options in the smart switch and I found a menu called Smartports.

I tried to find information about it but no documentation actually explained what is that and what is that for (I can find tons of documentations of how to setup).

So since this is a non production environment I enabled it and once you enable it you can specify roles to each port. For example: router (layer2), wireless access port (layer2 and 3), Server, Host, IP Phone, etc...

What will that actually do to my network? What will smartports really do? optimize the network workload ? It not really clear to me what smartport enabled will do and what advantage do I have to specify a role for a port.

Thank you,

Filipe

Hi,

smart ports are not actually special ports. when you select the device type which connected to smart port it will run some cli commands (macro) inside switch to configure port with relevant configurations for that device. you can find clear guide here,

Hi Kasun,

I followed that guide before and enabled the smart port support.

But should I specify each port or just select smart port configuration for all ports?

According to the manual, the smart port default configuration tries to figure it out what is connected to that port and adjust it to that device. If you specify a device for that port (change de default configuration), it will apply the macros right away for that device.

Correct?

yes, default configuration for all ports will try to select connected device which cannot guarantee 100% success. if you selected manually, you can select most suitable device type for port.
