The first/small file is for the boot loader. This is used in the initial stages of booting the router and it is small because it does not do the wide range of functions in the regular IOS image. The second/larger file is the regular IOS which is run after the bootloader has completed. This is the IOS that has all the features that you use in normal operation and that is why it is a larger file.

hi ,richard ,

thanks for ur help ,

i have another question ,

if i want to to put another ios  which is more update to the current one ,

should i upload one ios file, or two ios files ??

as u see there are two places , one in boot flash and the second in disk ,

with my best regards

If you want to upgrade the version of IOS that the switch is running then you need to upgrade the regular IOS on disk2. There are some circumstances where you would also need to upgrade the boot loader code (especially if you are introducing a new card which might not be supported by the old bootloader). But upgrading the boot loader code is much less frequently done than upgrading the regular IOS code.
