Welcome to the Cisco Support Community Ask the Expert conversation. Welcome to the Cisco Support Community Ask the Expert conversation. This is an opportunity to learn and ask questions about troubleshooting video call flows that traverse the video communications server (VCS) and Cisco Unified Communication Manager call control agents with Cisco expert Mahesh Anjan. You can ask questions on how to debug various endpoint and protocol combinations, extract useful logs, and determine common interoperability issues.

Mahesh Anjan is a product manager in the Collaboration and Communications Group at Cisco. He is an expert in deployment in deployment of video communication services, enterprise video solutions, and other telepresence products as well as unified communications. He has vast experience in VCS and Cisco Unified Communication Manager interoperability deployments. Anjan has worked at Cisco since 2005. He holds a bachelor's degree in electronics and communication engineering from the University of Bangalore, a master's degree in computer engineering from Wichita State University, and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Hi Mahesh,

How do we differentiate IPVC and MCU in terms of functionality?

Far better user experience, better quality video. TP MCU products are much better than IPVC providing an excellent experience through individual transcoding from w360p30 up to 1080p30. Looking at the RadVision web-site it looks like they have discontinued the equivalent of the IPVC line and are only marketing the next gen Elite series these days.

Hi Mahesh,

Thanks for the great session.

I have a few doubts; If I connect my MCU to CUCM 9.x:

- Will the endpoints registered to VCS be able to still use the MCU resources?

- WIll I be able to schedule conferences with TMS for this MCU ?

- Since I have to change the MCU configuration, will I lose the Multiway capability that I have today with endpoints registered to VCS ?

- What about Movi/FindMe users? any impact for them ?

Our plans are to migrate all the enpoints eventually to CUCM but we use FW Traversal services heavily and will need to consider the future Cisco strategy in this area.

From my understanding, when the MCU is registered to CUCM *and* with VCS, its not supported by TAC.   The reason being, the MCU can not track calls from two different points. (CUCM and VCS).  I have it running like this in CUCM 8.6 and Jabber and VCS and it works..but.....

My vision is to have an MCU for ad-hoc jabber drag n drop video calls and then another MCU for bridge calls (dedicated numbers to dial into)

  • Will the endpoints registered to VCS be able to still use the MCU resources?

VCS endpoints will still be able to use MCU resources but our recommendation is maintain separate MCU …

Yes, you can dial into rendezvous numbers without any problems.

For scheduled you will have an MCU under VCS, and again they can call into this from endpoints registered with either VCS or UCM.

What doesn’t work is calling into UCM adhoc conferences from VCS. But you can call from a UCM-registered endpoint to devices registered on VCS and use the conference button.

  • WIll I be able to schedule conferences with TMS for this MCU ?

you cannot use TMS to schedule conference if they are hanging off UCM

  • Since I have to change the MCU configuration, will I lose the Multiway capability that I have today with endpoints registered to VCS ?

Essentially MCU will shared between VCS and UCM ..and I don’t think multiway will have impact or the endpoints invoking conference factory

Two options, without Conductor you can have 3 pools of MCUs

Pool 1 – used for UCM adhoc only, these are under UCM, and set up as adhoc conference resources.

Pool 2 – used for rendezvous, these can be under either, and can be used for multiway as well. Set up as trunks from UCM in the normal way.

Pool 3 – used for TMS scheduled, currently must be under VCS

  • What about Movi/FindMe users? any impact for them ?

MCU will be transparent across UCM and VCS when you share the resources from enduser perspective ….but however we recommend to use 2 MCU's

however, you can use any resources that VCS ones can.

Hi Mahesh,

Thanks for reply.

I had a query on MOVI Clients. We have got VCS 7.x and endpoints like E20  and EX60.They are working fine.

We have got licenses for MOVI clients as well but do not have software. We have tried downloading the software using our CCOID but seems to be of Jabber. Can u guide us with approporiate MOVI software link? Also, do we need to write to licensing team to provide us with licenses.

Do we need to load these licenses on VCS?

Please advice.

MOVi has been renamed to Cisco telepresence Jabber Video ( registers to only VCS)

here is the latest SW link :

pls ask your cisco account team to cut the lic. for Jabber video .

Hi Mahesh,

I enjojed your recent troubleshooting VCS to CUCM presentation on Cisco live.  I have an issue that I am wondering how to troubleshoot.  We have had CTS 3010s with a 7975 phone in place for some time.  The normal Telepresence midlet used to show up on the phone.  We recently added a VCS, TS7010 and TMS to our network and did the VCS to CUCM integration.  Since then the Telepresence midlet does not show on the phone, but the phone displays at the bottom of the screen "No conference scheduled".  If you press the manual softkey on the 3010 phone the midlet reappears.  I am not sure where that message is coming from or how to get the midlet to display as it did previously.  Can you point me in the correct direction?

Hi Mike.

Can we get the CTS logs to start with. Also what is the CTS version you are running ?

Mahesh Anjan

Great session guys, especially webcast recording, super cool!

I have one high level question here, hopefully it is not out of the scope of this session: while I watched that recording I noticed it is not focused just on one version of CUCM, i.e. versions 8.6 and 9.0 were mentioned and I wonder if we still need VCS or we can start planning endpoint migration from VCS to CUCM? In other words, are there any critical features still available exclusively on VCS that we are missing on CUCM 9.0?

Hi Teraro,

these are some VCS differentiating features ...

H323/SIP interworking,

Expressway firewall traversal,

legacy endpoint interop,

encryption policy

Hello Mahesh,

Great presentation last week. Here are few questions that we did not have time to address during the live event.

This is one of them:

We have problems with dynamic port reservation using the MCU 5300 to CUCM with both SIP/HTTP and H.323 simultaneously for meeting room / ad-hoc. Is this even possible?

Looking forward to your reply.

thank you!

Another question asked last week:

To confirm Ad-Hoc conferencing feature in TE6.0:  you do not require an MCU if you have a multisite license on an EX90 endpoint for example while registered to CUCM ? Just want to be clear on this is supported and I believe is the default mode

Thank you.
