I have a Gateway SPA 3102. My internet connection is wireless. Can I connect the SPA 3102 to the computer and use it to make VOIP calls?

Lots of people looking, no one answering> Am I in the wrong forum?

Yes. Use "small business - phones".

Paolo, thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, I don't know what you mean by "small business-phones" and an internet search has not turned up any answers.

Perhaps my origonal question is not detailed enough so I'll try to explain my position in more detail.

I am moving to a house in a fairly remote part of Australia without a telephone connection. To get the phone on would be very expensive and would also take months. I have mobile phone and internet connection available but only through one carrier, the most expensive by far.

I am not a big user of either the phone or the internet but every now and then, I have to make one of those calls where you are put through a hundred menus and then left on hold for hours. A single call can send you broke on a mobile phone.

My proposed solution is to have a prepaid wireless internet connection and to use a "sip" connection to join a VOIP provider such as Voipcheap or Voipbuster which will give me unlimited calls to landlines in Australia for around $50 per year. I have a SPA 3102. Can I connect it to my computer and then connect a phone handset to it to achieve my solution? I also have a PAP 2T if this would work  better.

Yes, the ex-linksys devices can be used with internet telephony providers.

The small business forum, phones is another section of this forum, that discusses these devices.

Thanks Paolo, I'll look there. I am the smallest of small businesses, one laptop in the Australian outback linked to the world by a USB wireless dongle.

That is cool. But, you should get a 3G router with ethernet ports, because that is what is needed for hookup phones adapters and stuff.

I should get a 3G router but can I make Voip calls using what I've got? I've tried "soft phones" but found the quality next to useless. I can't find any current discussion in the small business section, doesn't mean it's not there, just that I can't find it.

If a softphone works poorly, chances are that an adapter will not do better.

That is because you may not have enough bandwidth or connection quality to make phone calls.

The soft phone was no good but the adapter works perfectly. This is with a T2 broadband connection, I haven't moved yet.
