Here is a scenario that I am trying to do. I want to use the SX80 as a switcher for laptop, dvd, etc. Is there a way to get surround sound out of the sx80?

No, as per the SX80 Data Sheet (See the "Audio standards" section), the SX80 only supports mono and stereo.

That said, it would be interesting how the codec processes the sound of the hdmi
in and outputs, if it could have some digital sound pass trough itself it would not need
to have surround sound to offer it on an output, as its just some AC3 or Dolby Digital signal.
But I would also assume that it does not have that.
I would anyhow get some sourround receiver and hook up your DVD player and stuff like that
to it and try to use one of the video uplinks from the receiver towards the SX80.
If you use a surround sound system as your speaker system for your SX80, please
try out if it adds to much delay, as this can confuse the echo cancellation system of the SX80
which will then annoy your remote side.
