TMS 1st Gen Appliance and Upgrade to 14.x

I have a cusotmer  that has a first generation TMS appliance.  I have them upgraded to 13.2  but I have been looking to see if there is an upgrade path to 14.x.

since this is a new Microsoft OS, Will the customer have to purchase the 2008 server OS or is this in the ISO image somewhere?

Or are they going to be stuck at 13.2?

Re: TMS 1st Gen Appliance and Upgrade to 14.x

Looks like I can upgrade to 14.x on the 1st gen TMS appliance from an OS point of view.

Concern is that the appliance has 2 Gig of RAM but the installation guide says 4 Gig is recommended.

Anyone know about memory for this box?

Hi

Even though the appliance has 2 GB of RAM it will still work, you will just get a warning during installation but you can just click that away and continue. It is really depending on the load of the TMS and the amount of systems / integrations you are running on the appliance. If you do the upgrade and you eventually find the system being degraded then moving towards a virtual server environment or a physical box that support the cisco recommended hardware might be a solution. The appliance is end of life and will not be upgraded to 2008 or have any hardware upgrades.

It will work even though the appliance have only 2 gb of RAM but if you experience that the system is degraded (which is depending on the integration / amount of systems being handled) then raising a TAC case for an issue like that might result in a recommendation to move towards more powerful hardware. That's about it.

FYI, same discussion going on over here.

HI,

It's better to follow what is as per the document and as per the docs it requires Min 4 GiG of RAM. I have a customer case where TMSPE never came up as they were having 2 Gigs of RAM. Once they upgraded to 4 Gig everthing was working as expected.

In case of serious issue, you will be pointed to documents to fulfil minimum requirements.

And just to 'echo' what Sumeet says, we clearly document this concerning the Cisco TMS Appliance with TMSPE being installed to it. See page 7 in the TMSPE v1.0 Deployment Guide:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/telepresence/infrastructure/tmspe/install_guide/Cisco_TMSPE_Deployment_Guide_1-0_with_14-1.pdf

The same is true for TMSPE v1.1 has well, except it is on page 6 of the TMSPE v1.1 Deployment Guide:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/telepresence/infrastructure/tmspe/install_guide/Cisco_TMSPE_Deployment_Guide_1-1.pdf

I know thispost is a year old but I'm now at this point of upg RAM or migrating to hardware. Does anyone know the max RAM available for the appliance? Will it work with 8GB?

I'd highly suggest you migrate from the TMS hardware appliance to a virtual TMS server.  As the TMS appliance is end of sale already and soon to be end of life in a few years, it'd suggest you migrate so you can take advantage of not being trapped by the hardware limitations of the TMS appliance.

+5 to the suggestion of going Virtual if you can - and this is exactly what we have done here recently (although it was from a previous software version, not an appliance).

This document (Migrating TMS to a new Server) may be of assistance too.

You'll also need to check with licencing if you're using an old appliance - you'll need to change from having an 80Bxxxx (applicance licence) to an 80Axxxxxx (software licence) if you're going to do this.

Wayne De Nardi,

Thanks for the (Migrating TMS to a new Serverdoc; haven't seen that one before. Did you migrate from an 80B to 80A and if so, was there a cost or did Cisco convert and no cost? I know it a loaded question. Did you go from appliance to virtual?

I already have a R610 server with WS2k8 loaded, just need answers for licensing and moving the management licenses over so they are associated with 80A and not 80B.

No, we didn't go from an 80Bxxxx to an 80Axxxx - we already had an A licence, but have gone virtual with our new server(s).

From all the documents I can find, it's not a "free" process.  You need to purchase the "A" version of TMS - you can then transfer all your "B" options to the "A" version via the cisco licencing team.

Patrick Sparkman,

Thanks, but this I already know. I have a new Dell R610 I'd like to migrate to but I went round and round with CIsco, asking for the cost of switching the license from and 80B to 80A license and as far as I got was what your serial and RMA number. The rep even ask do I have permission to look up your serial, YES!!, I sent to you didn't I. Then I was asked two more times for the RMA even after I told him I didn't have one and that I just wanted to know if there is a cost and what is it. I closed the ticket, can only bang my head against the wall so much. Sorry for TMI. I'll have to open another ticket with Cisco and hope not to get the same lame rep.
