I've been running a UCM environment for some time now (Recently upgraded to 10.5). So far, I've been lucky enough to have remote offices with decent bandwidth so I can get away with g.711. I now have a site on a cradlepoint and need to implement a region using g.729. My question is do I need a transcoder on the HQ and remote office side? Or will just one at HQ be sufficient enough?

You can configure a single transcoder and assign that to the the MRGL of the devices at each site and that will/should work. However, it is recommended that you should have HW Media Resources configured locally at each site in case if you have the required resources in terms of routers, DSPs etc.
