Is a new release key required when upgrading TMS versions, and If one is required, is there some place in TMS that shows when you have a valid key for the current version or when you need to apply for a new one?

Hi Patrick
if you are asking for the upgrade part if the TMS installer will show you a warning if the key is valid for the version you are trying to upgrade to then yes:
This is in the installation wizard when upgrading from a major version to another and if you do not provide the correct key. If the key is correct the upgrade will continue without this question.
And as sumeet is saying if you have a correct serial number and the TMS is not showing any warnings when you are operating the TMS the key is most likely valid.

Hi Patrick, New release key is required only when upgrading TMS from 12.x to 13.x or 14.x major version release.
Ex: If your TMS is installed with 13.1 and if you want to upgrade to 13.2 or 13.2.1 you don't need the new release keys, if you are upgrading from 13.2 to 14.0 or 14.1 future release then you need the new release key.
You can obtain the new release key for all future releases by sending e-mail to licensing@cisco.com with your TMS Serial no covered with active contract and they will issue the same.

Thanks! Is there any kind of notification if TMS is using a valid release key for the current software version installed, or is it just something that the administrator that is upgrading TMS simply needs to keep in mind when upgrading?

Hi Patrick,
Once you apply release key, under the right hand bottom of TMS web you will get the serial # of TMS server and this vaildates the release keys. Below is the format of release key:
Please note that options keys are binded with release keys. So options keys are generated with TMS serial # and unless and until you don't apply correct release keys that will populate the serial # of TMS server and then only you can apply the options keys.

How do you get a valid key?
I'm going from 13.2 to 14.x and my release key says its not valid?

Wow, you dug up an old thread.
If you have an active service contract for your TMS you can go to the Cisco Licensing Portal and request a new release key for the major version you're upgrading to.
When you're logged into the portal, go to:
Get Other Licenses > Telepresence Software Release Key

What a fun way to find that your contract hasn't been valid since 2013... gonna have to have a word with my vendor...
