VCS Diagnostic Log Output

Hello!

In trying to determine why traversal calls are intermittenetly failing, I came across the following in the VCS-E Diagnostic Debug log;

2013-09-12T11:04:20-07:00 cefa-videoconf-vcsexpress01 tvcs: UTCTime="2013-09-12 18:04:20,223" Module="developer.fsm" Level="ERROR" CodeLocation="allshare/fsm/fsmprntf.cpp(324)" Method="::fsm_ERRTEXT" Thread="0x7f7965ca6700":  Detail="W Rejecting attempt from HTTPFSM to resolve empty hostname" Self="DNS:0" Sender="HTTPFSM:0" Msg="DNS_HostByName_Req" Task="T_READY_DNS_HOSTBYNAME_REQ" State="S_READY" NxtState="S_READY"

2013-09-12T11:04:20-07:00 cefa-videoconf-vcsexpress01 tvcs: UTCTime="2013-09-12 18:04:20,223" Module="developer.http" Level="ERROR" CodeLocation="ppcmains/httpclient/httpfeedtask.cpp(976)" Method="::HTTPFEED_doHTTPResponse" Thread="0x7f7965ca6700":  Detail="Could not connect to URL."

2013-09-12T11:04:20-07:00 cefa-videoconf-vcsexpress01 tvcs: UTCTime="2013-09-12 18:04:20,224" Module="developer.http" Level="ERROR" CodeLocation="ppcmains/httpclient/httpfeedtask.cpp(607)" Method="::httpfeed_retry" Thread="0x7f7965ca6700":  Detail="Max number of retries. Feedback failed this time."

It looks like the VCS is trying to reach something but is giving up because the max number of retries has been achieved.  I do not see this messaging when the calls are making it though the firewall as they should.  When the calls start failing, I see the above repeated numerous times.

The VCSes are both running X7.2.2.  The call is going through an IPGW running 2.0(1.7), which is registered to the VCS-E.  The call originates from the public internet, going to an endpoint inside the firewall   The call protocol through the firewall is H.323.

My questions are;

- Could this message sequence be the cause of the calls failing?

- If this is just a symptom of the actual problem, what is HTTPFSM and what empty hostname could it be trying to resolve?

- The first entry shows "W Rejecting attempt".  Would "W" be the firewall?

- There is an External Manager configured on theVCS-E, which can't be reached from the public internet.  Could attempts by the VCS-E to reach the External Manager trigger a firewall denial which would prevent calls from completing?

- and finally, Does the above messaging look familiar to anyone?

Thanks!

Do not recall having seen these messages in my logs, but besides now grep-ing on the current

files I did not look for it neither.

HTTP looks like some web service stuff, maybe your VCS tries to connect to your TMS and

fails, or some policy service, or some internal api access, provisioning, feedback receiver ...

As you already say external manager is set but not ok, I would think thats the reason.

Also fits as this sends a feedback to the manager when the call is done, which would be the case

if it failed.

Check that you do not have an ALG in the path, which can also be on the remote site.

The VCS has a quite modern h323 signaling, so what works in other directions can be broken

when a vcs is in the picture.

How is the call flow? Does the remote site connect directly to the IPGW?

We had the feeling that everything works much smoother asking people to dial the VCS IP

and then use the VCS Fallback alias to point to a alias on the IPGW ;-)

Hi Bob,

is this the only logs or are there any more logs before this error seen in the logs?

2013-09-12T11:04:20-07:00  cefa-videoconf-vcsexpress01 tvcs: UTCTime="2013-09-12 18:04:20,223"  Module="developer.http" Level="ERROR"  CodeLocation="ppcmains/httpclient/httpfeedtask.cpp(976)"  Method="::HTTPFEED_doHTTPResponse" Thread="0x7f7965ca6700":   Detail="Could not connect to URL."

2013-09-12T11:04:20-07:00  cefa-videoconf-vcsexpress01 tvcs: UTCTime="2013-09-12 18:04:20,224"  Module="developer.http" Level="ERROR"  CodeLocation="ppcmains/httpclient/httpfeedtask.cpp(607)"  Method="::httpfeed_retry" Thread="0x7f7965ca6700":  Detail="Max number  of retries. Feedback failed this time."

so it looks like its failing to send feedback probably. I think more logs are required here to prove whats going wrong.

If this is impacting your business I ould request you top open TAC case.

Hello all,

Thank you for the input.  The investigation of this issue has gone off on another course.  The supposition that this is probably the VCS-E trying to connect to TMS is likely the cause, and it was just coincidence it showed up in the failed call log.

Thanks!
