Adding new Unity Servers

I currently have one Unity 4.0(4)SR1 Voice Messaging only server - Exchange 2000 on box. We are adding two additional servers on the network with failover and two off box Exchange servers. Looking for a link to documentation that explains how to best install these into our existing enviroment. In particular, how to set up the new Exchange servers for our enviroment. We are not an Exchange/AD shop. Everything I have found so far assumes that you already have your off box Exchange up and running. Thanks!

I'll assume that you want all the unity servers to be able to talk to each via digital networking.

Add the new exchange server into the domain and exchange ORG. You did not mention if all the new servers would be in the same physical location. If yes, make both the exchange servers domain controllers, and demote the current unity server from being a domain controller. If the exchange servers are not in the same SITE as defined by MS, then you will need to have a domain controller and global catalog for each site, while keeping the existing Unity server as a Domain Controller.

Yes, I do want to use digital networking between all of the servers. The new servers will be at the same site but at a different physical location than the existing Unity server. Does this mean I will have two SITES as defined by MS? Thank you for your advice.

In any case, you would want an additional domain controller for reduncancy.

So for the new servers, make at least one of the exchange servers a domain controller. The new unity servers' subscribers mailboxes should be on the new exchange servers.

I have a similar situation where we want to add a new unity server into the same AD as a backup domain controller. The current VMO unity server is the primary domain controller of the AD and exchange is off-box. Can I add the new unity server into the same AD as a backup domain controller? I don't plan to setup digital networking, but might at a later time. Please advise. Thank you in advance.

The answer is depends; do you have enough machine to handle an additional duty to the server? If yes,the by all means add another server - this DOES NOT mean that you don't have to do backups.
