In my experience the documentation around this is very accurate and if you follow it to the letter you have a high potential to succeed with this. As with anything that is not a cookie cutter type of this to do it has it's risks associated with it. As a precaution I would recommend you to keep an untouched clone/copy of the VM so that you have the chance to rollback if needed.
