No you can't  DRS backup from one version can only be restored on the same version and that too with the same details such as IP Address, Hostname, Default Gateway etc. You can use PCD in order to migrate from CM 7.1.5 to 10.5, refer below for more details:

Do notice that PCD requires a specific ESXi licensing to work, if you do not have the right licensing, your other option would be to use the drive to 9 program, or to upgrade your CUCM to (at least) 8.6 to them DRS into a virtual machine, and then keep upgrading.

Dear Jaime,

Thanks for your quick response.

I'hv not soecific license for PCD.

If i'm not wrong, You said,1st i have to migrate it to CUCM 8.6 from CUCM 7.1.5 using DRS restore. And then migrate it to CUCM 10.5 using DRS. Right ?

Thanks

At no point Jaime said that you will need to migrate from CM 7.1.5 using DRS, he simply said upgrade your CUCM to (at least) 8.6 to them DRS into a virtual machine, and then keep upgrading

Please note there is a difference between migration and upgrade. Migration involves change of hardware that maybe Physical to Virtual (P2V) or Virtual to Virtual (V2V) whereas upgrading to 8.6 does not necessarily require the change of hardware, you can upgrade on it while staying on the same hardware then take a DRS backup, build 8.6 on the virtual environment with same details i.e. IP Address, Hostname etc and perform the restore and then continue upgrading to 10.5

Hi Deepak,

Good Day. In order to restore the CUCM using DRS Backup, what are all the details that we need to set once we rebuild the cucm to a UCS Server? Do we need to use same Application Password? The thing is, the customer forget the password for the CUCM Application account but other details like administrator account, secret password, etc. are still the same. Appreciate if you can advise us the critical information that we need to consider during the restoring of DRS Backup. Thank you very much.

No, it doesn't seem like you have any previous experience doing this, as you're not understanding how to do this.

DRS can only be restored on the EXACT SAME VERSION from which it was taken, Deepak already explained that, and it should have been clear.

If you cannot use PCD, you would need to upgrade your CUCM to 8.6, DRS from that MCS 8.6 CUCM, to an 8.6 VM, then, keep upgrading.

The process is not that hard, but there are many things that have to be considered and taken care of, if you have never done this, you really should consider hiring a consultant.

If you're going to do this, you need to do your due diligence, and start by reading the relevant documentation for each step, release notes, upgrade guides, and the DRS guides.
