CUCM - Soft Phone IP Communicator 8.6.6

VOICE SYSTEM: Cisco Systems Small Business Pro UC560-FXO-K9 V01
PHONES: Cisco CP-7975G IP Phone Gig Ethernet, Color and 8 Lines

FIREWALL: Juniper SRX650-BASE-SRE6-645AP
SWITCH: JUNIPER 650 VLAN POE of 24 Ports
SIP PROVIDER: VOIP Innovations.

My Cisco phones are functioning well with UC560.

The issue is soft phone IP Communicator version 8.6.6.0

It seems to be able to contact TFTP server from my PC Win 10 and obtain IP address but no dial tone.

Do I need to install Call Manager and if so what version will be compatible with my UC560 box? Is there another way?

If needed, I am planning to deploy Call Manager on vmware 6.5.

Any advice is appreciated.

The CIPC will get its Option 150 from the DHCP pool of the PC. Is that option set?

What CIPC thinks it knows can be verified on the Network tab in the CIPC preferences. If the TFTP shows in the Network tab correctly, then something else is going on. In that case, please post a screen-shot of the Status messages (or pull the log off of the PC) so we can see what is going on.

While I'm pulling the logs and getting a screen shot, can you explain the function of a Call Manager and if I need it? Can it help me in terms of managing soft phones?

If you have a system that is supporting hardphones, it should support CIPC as well. The only exception I can think of is that SIP CME does not support CIPC, although there are some workarounds you can try. You should not need a full CUCM system.

What are the troubleshooting steps I can take besides screenshots? How do I take the logs and which logs on my PC are you referring to?

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Cisco\Communicator

Post the most recent Trace File to start with. Plus the screen grabs I mentioned.

Please see attached.

I will assume your CME instance is bound to 10.1.100.1 and I assume you built the ephone with the MAC address of 3642.6549.4859. But - It looks to me like your CIPC wants localization files before it will register. The trace files show repeated attempts to download them from the TFTP server and failing. CIPC shouldn't *have* to have localization files, but not having them can interfere with CIPC registering.

Please try a couple of things, and if they fail I will point you to the correct localization files to see if that fixes the problem:

1) If you have not, please issue the create-cnf files command and then restart the phone.

config t

telephony-service

create cnf-files

2) If that fails, you can try 'resetting' CIPC on the local PC by navigating to C:\Users\Toni\AppData\Roaming\Cisco and deleting (or renaming) the "Communicator" folder entirely. Then repeat the delete (or rename) of the Communicator folder under C:\Users\Toni\AppData\Local\Cisco

3) If #1 and #2 fail, please post the section of your config under telephony-service, and also the ephone configuration for this phone. Additionally, the output for "show telephony-service tftp-bindings".

How can I determine that cnf files have not already been created? Can I do more damage by running command in #1 if cnf files already present on UC560?

Is there something I can do to look first to see prior running create cnf command?

Thanks

The create cnf-files simply refreshes the cnf.xml configuration files that the phones download when they boot. You can run that at any time, and should run it any time you make a change to an ephone or an ephone-dn.

I suggested that you run that command in case a change had been made and the files not yet refreshed. Running the command again will not change anything that is already set, so it is safe.

As suggested I did #1 and #2. No success. Still Locale update error.

Your config looks fine and I see the cnf.xml files for your CIPC phone in flash. It looks to me like you've done everything right.

The log file you posted clearly shows that your phone is reaching the CME TFTP server and finding its config file. It fails when trying to download localization files.

I seem to remember having to install localization files for CME for certain phones now and again, but rarely. However, Cisco's guide shows that installing localization files is required for CIPC on CME so I think you are hitting a sweet spot where you will have to install them:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucme/admin/configuration/manual/cmeadm/cmelocal.html#concept_D961948CB6F14A04968201BF6B345A95

I think that is your next step.

One other thing - and humor me on this one - configure your CIPC with a "Use this adapter" address of SEP364265494859 rather than just the MAC address alone. Either can be used with CUCM, but when I work with CIPC on CME in my lab environment it makes a difference. If your CIPC doesn't register, then change it back and never mind.

I am trying to follow instructions. I am not sure what's wrong. Other than changing the interface on soft phone which I already tried unsuccessfully what else do you recommend I do to fix this issue. Where do I begin now?

If nothing we have suggested has worked, I think you are left with installing localization files on your CME. That is the TFTP download that is failing according to the log you posted.

I posted a link above to the documentation that will walk you through that process.
