CUPS and Jabber

Hi

I wanted to know can someone tell me about how Jabber works with Presence.The reason I ask is because we have a presence server but honestly we never even use it. My manager came to me and heard from one of his friends that they are able to use the jabber client for his IPhone and IPad and that it's all due to there presence server. We just upgraded our server  last year to 8.6.1-10000.34. So is there anything I need to do on our server to make this jabber application work or do I need to upgrade to the latest version to get the functionality that they are looking for.
