Hi,
I was wondering that if you had Unity software version 4.0(3) installed and you wanted to upgrade to version 4.0(4) or 4.0(5), can you just go ahead and install the new software or do you need a new license file as well?
Many thanks in advance!

As long as you are not completely reloading the system or changing the NIC cards, the in place software upgrade should not require a new license.
Even going from 4.05 to 4.2, still uses the same license.
Cheers!

Well I have the cisco CD for 4.0(4) and was hoping I can just put that into the same server that already has 4.0(3) installed and then the CD will realise Unity is installed and will just upgrade it without the worry about any licensing. Is that the case? I was not too sure what you mean by reloading the system?
Thanks for your quick response!

Hi Michael,
Just wanted to add a link and a little info to Tcat's good post;
What Cisco Unity maintenance contracts are available, and what does each cover?
Software Application Support plus Upgrades (SASU) Customers are entitled to maintenance releases, minor releases, and major releases (2.x.x to 3.x.x and to 4.x.x).
Software Application Support (SAS) Customers are entitled to maintenance releases and minor software updates (2.4.6x to 2.4.6x) but are not entitled to major releases.
From this good licensing doc;
Hope this helps!

That is the case.. you should be just fine by inserting the cd's and going for it. Just follow the upgrade procedures. with 4.0(4) there are a few patches to install afterwards you will want to get on.
What I meant was that some people will the "two hop" upgrade. Install a new server, then load 4.0(3), then use DIRT to export and re-import to the new server, then run the inplace upgrade. In this scenario, you would need a new key because of the new NIC cards in the new server.
Also please note, if you are upgrading, take the time to do a DIRT backup, and also pull one drive before doing the upgrade. This will give a complete backup of the the entire system in case something goes bad..... You can down the system, pull the drive you tried to upgrade, push in the other drive and boot back to the good original system.
cheers
