Extension Mobility Log in

Extension mobility.  On our existing Avaya systems  users login to any phone using a combination of their extension (in our case 7  digits) plus a PIN number which is set to the last 4 digits of the user  extension.  We wanted to implement it the same way on Cisco but it required  entering the username plus a PIN number.  Typing a username on a phone key pad  was met with a lot of frowns and comparisons with old cell phones.  is there a way to do this. We have a  LDAP connection to  ADs for users

It's sort of a problem.

If you are using sAMAccountName for userid with your AD integration, you can log in to all the web pages and desktop apps with username/password as you would expect to. This is good. However, as you've found, entering a username on the phone can be tedious.

The other option is to use another field such as telephoneNumber as userid, and then you can log in to EM with telephoneNumber and PIN. That however means that now if you log in to a PC app or webpage you must log in with telephoneNumber and AD password - not intuitive.

Most customers have EM, but have it set up to log of other extensions at logon, and with  no max login timer, such that people who don't EM a lot don't have to log out every day.

What I think would be a good solution would be to develop a simple EM replacement service which would resolve your telephoneNumber to a user ID (e.g. you enter tel number and it will resolve your user ID, leaving you to enter just the PIN). That's custom development for you though, and I've not had the time or absolute need to do it yet.
