Hi, our customer need to migrate a CUCM environment from V5.1.2 to V8.0.1.    Wonder what will be the proper path for it.    I couldn't find right document from Cisco Documentation site.

The only doc find was from 4.x using DMA to 7.12, but doesn't seem to apply to our case.   Wonder if any of you can give some direction ?   Thanks ahead !

Bookmark the compatibility matrix:  http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/compat/ccmcompmatr.html

I recommend you go to 8.0(3a) and not 8.0(1).

From the compatibility matrix, you will see that the following versions have direct upgrades to 8.0(3a).

8.0(3), 8.0(2c)SU1, 8.0(2c), 8.0(2b), 8.0(2a), 8.0(2), 8.0(1), 7.1(3b)SU2, 7.1(3b)SU1, 7.1(3b), 7.1(3a)SU1a, 7.1(3a)SU1, 7.1(3a), 7.1(3), 7.1(2b)SU1, 7.1(2b), 7.1(2a)SU1, 7.1(2a), 7.1(2), 7.0(2a)SU3, 7.0(2a)SU2, 7.0(2a)SU1, 7.0(2a), 7.0(2), 7.0(1)SU1a, 7.0(1)SU1, 7.0(1), 6.1(5)SU2, 6.1(5)SU1, 6.1(5), 6.1(4a)SU2, 6.1(4a), 6.1(4)SU1, 6.1(4), 6.1(3b)SU1, 6.1(3b), 6.1(3a), 6.1(3), 6.1(2)SU1a, 6.1(2)SU1, 6.1(2)

You will therefore need to go through an interim step to get from 5.1(2) to 8.0(3a).

It is a two step process, check out the upgrade guide

Thanks Srini and Ellis for your reply.   From the information provided,

I wonder if this is a 2 steps or 3 steps process (as I don't see a upgrade path mentioned in the doc that goes from 5.1.2 to 7.1x  , if so would the steps be :

1. Upgrade UCM 5.1.2 to 5.1(3e) on the same server.

2. Then upgrade the 5.1(3e) server 7.1x and perform a DRS backup from this server.

3. Install 7.1.x on the 2nd server with DB recovery from the older server.   Then upgrade to the 8.0(3a) as recommended.

Wonder if this is the right understanding, or you may have more optimozed path to fulfill this upgrading ?   Appreciate your help !

Tina

You are right, because of your hardware, you have a 3rd step you need to make.

What you listed would work.  You could take step 2 all the way to 8.0 and do your DRS and convert, but that depends on hardware and it isn't a better solution than what you provided.

Great , thanks a lot Ellis !

Correct 3 step process in this case. Sometimes depending on the size of the cluster you may decide to rebuild much quicker from scratch

Thanks

Hi, Srini,

Thanks for the suggtestion.   I'm going to look into the both, upgrading and rebuild path, depending on our customer's condition.

In case we need to go through upgrading path as discussed, I have one more question regard Licence.

As we will go through interim step on Ver 7.1x,  will we have limitation from licence requirement ?    As I'm sure 5.x and 8.x will be taken cared of, yet if we don't have 7.1x licence, will the DRS  convert work normally on the new and older server ?

Yes it will since you are going through that step temporarily and not running 7.X for extended time

Thanks
