Hi,
Planning to move Unity 4.04 to an other more powerfull server with the same name and ip address as the old unity server. The document "Replacing or Converting a Cisco Unity Server" does not describe removing the old unity server out of the domain first before rebuilding the new one. Is this step needed ?

In the doc you referred, it is implied that you will have another server with Unity already installed and ready to go. (the doc reads "Disconnect the old Cisco Unity server from the network")
The fastest way to get the new server working is to have it installed in demo mode while the production server is online. On the new server, you will need Windows, SQL, Exchange or Exchange Tools, Service packs, and finally Unity installed. If you were to take the production server offline, and then perform the steps, you will be down for hours without Unity.
However, if you must keep your current server name, you'd have to remove it from the domain first.

I suggest using an alias. End user points to the alias. DNS redirects to the actual host.
