I have 3 Unity servers. Why would I need global catalog server? Is it better to have one or not?
Thanks,

Hi -
Are you running Unity voicemail only with AD/Exchange onbox? If you are, the first domain controller created in the forest automatically is set as a global catalog server. You can check this from Active Directory Sites and Services MMC - expand your site - server - NTDS Settings and select Properties. On the General Tab there will be a check box for selecting as a GC. Unity synchronizes the MSDE 2000 or SQL Server 2000 database on the server with the GC's directory. If your voicemail servers are digitally networked (all in same AD forest), Unity uses the information in the GC to find out about subscribers on other Unity servers. Here is a good link that describes the usage of the GC - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/products_white_paper09186a00800875c5.shtml

If you are running a VM only domain, you should have Global Catalog server running on server by itself. If add the GC roles to a Unity server and you populate it with 1000's of users (or a 1000 user) you risk running that server to it's limit. Keep the roles of AD if possible on other servers and leave Unity to do Unity tasks.
