It can be used that way. My preference would be to do it a different way as POTS lines can be problematic. Since the phone companies do less and less of them, they don't the same attention as they once did. If you go that route, I would strongly encourage you to schedule testing of that line on at least a monthly basis. Otherwise it may not be functional when you need it.
