analog phone and digital telephone

Hi everybody

I have some very basic questions. I could not find a link or book that can explain these questions.

When we speak digital telephone system what does it mean?

does it mean the connection between central offices are digital or  the connection between central office and subscriber telephone (i.e last mile) is digital?

When we speak of analog phones system what does it mean ?

does it mean the connection between central offices are analog or the connection between central office and subscriber's phone is analog?
