Hi,

all the vendors are puting wideband codecs in their line of phones (even Grandstream). When can I expect that wideband codecs are introduced to SPA series of phones (G722 to begin with)?

Ognjen

Dear Ognjen;

There is no plans to incorporate Wideband codecs in SPA9X2 family, but on newer Cisco SPA products, such as SPA525G (it does not have wideband audio codecs yet but it is on the short term roadmap).

There is one important reason behind it. We don't want to generate false expectations with the word "wideband". One thing is wideband codec (firmware) which you could incorporate in any IP phone, however the most important part is related to the quality of microphone, handset and speaker, that should also support wideband. In order to have a true wideband experience you need to incorporate wideband-capable hardware, something not available in SPA9X2 (and in most of Small Business IP Phones). SPA525G has a wideband capable hardware, so we will leverage it with Wideband codecs.

Regards, and thanks for your feedback!

Hello,

thanks for the reply. With 525G in mind, is the 52X series to replace 9x2 or two lines will be sold separately (SPAs for SIP, 52X for SPCP)? I understand that the phones are physically identical? Can you elaborate?

Regards,

Ognjen

Hi Ognjen,

Great questions.

No, the SPA5xx series phones is not a replacement for the SPA9xx phones and the two product lines will continue to be sold separately.

The phones are not identical, but are similar.

521S and 524S are similar to SPA922 and SPA942 but run SPCP [UC500] instead of SIP [SPA9000 etc.]

SPA525G is similar to the SPA962 but:

  • can run either SIP [SPA9000 etc.] or SPCP [UC500] [phone auto-detects]
  • has 5 lines
  • supports the SPA932 [32-button attendant console]
  • supports BlueTooth
  • includes a USB port
  • includes a MP3 player
  • can run as a 802.3G wireless client or cabled with CAT5
  • has better acoustics, built from scratch for high-quality audio
  • ... ...

Regards,

Patrick
