Cisco VPN client x64 for win7 - will not install

Hello guys,

I have fresh windows 7 x64 installation and I try install Cisco VPN client (vpnclient-winx64-msi-5.0.07.0290-k9.exe). Installation ends with fatal error "Installation ended prematurely of an error". I red lot of 'step-by-step' how to solve this problem (run as administrator, even though that I'm administrator; UAC disabled; run in WinXP-mode; etc), without success.

I tried run installation process from cmd with verbose logging "msiexec /i vpnclient_setup.msi /lv log.txt" (and other 'recomended' optional parameters). The same result - fatal error.

Can anybody tell me where is the problem? (installation file is not corupted)

Hi ,

Do you have any personal Windows Firewall or Anti Virus installed ? Please try disabling it and installing the VPN Client.

Hello Namit,

firewall and antivirus were disabled.

Installation under local user was succesfull. Now it works under domain user (both users - local and domain, have the same priviledges for local computer. I can't understand it.).

Did you disable the Firewall and Anti Virus now or were already disabled before installation. Earlier was the installation being done as local user or domain user ?

Hi,

fw and antivirus were disabled before installation process, but the problem was not connected to fw or antivirus. I installed it as domain user, but this user has admin priviledges to local computer. Maybe only domain user has some 'problem' (other (network-based) application are installed without problem). Hard to say, where was the problem. I attached whole verbose log file from installation process, you can check it. There was problem with something others.

This can be caused by a problem with the Wise Installer and vbscripts.  It is caused by a problem with the Wise Installer use of vbscripts This occurs when you are unable to run VBScripts on your computer. This can be due to either VBScript being disabled or unregistered. To resolve this issue follow the steps below to register VBscript your computer:

•   Ensure the VBscript is installed.
•   Turn off script blocking antivirus and personal firewall software.
•   Locate the vbscript.dll on your system. On 32-bit systems, this file should be located at C:\Windows\System32. On 64-bit systems, the file should be located at C:\Windows\SysWOW64.
•   Go to Start > Run and at the prompt enter: regsvr32.exe .

So,

for those who are really looking to a solution to this following is what I did to solve the problem (on a Windows 74bit):

1) First launch cmd.exe as administrator and move to the folder where the vpnclient is unpacked (e.g. c:\vpnclient)

2) Run the command:

msiexec /i c:\vpnclient\vpnclient_setup.msi /qb /lv log.txt

3) if you receive an "Internal Error 2738" message then there is something wrong with your VBScript installation

3.1) double check this opening the log.txt file created with the previous command and look for the string:

DEBUG: Error 2738:  Could not access VBScript runtime for custom action

4) if the above string is there try the following commands:

for a windows 32bit run:

c:\windows\system32\regsvr32 vbscript.dll

for a windows 64bit run:

c:\windows\syswow64\regsvr32 vbscript.dll

and try again the installation as in step 2

5) if you still get an error "2738" as in step 3 then try the following:

reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}" /f

now retry to register "vbscript.dll" as shown in step 4 (according to your operating system) and retry the installation as in step 2

Now it should work!

If not....then call Cisco until they solve your problem!!!!

I was getting the "Installation ended prematurely because of an error" message when clicking Next in the installer. Step 5 in the above solution fixed the installer and I was able to successfully install and use the VPN client. (I installed with vpnclient-winx64-msi-5.0.07.0440-k9.exe)

Yea none of this worked for me so after another hour of searching and testing I stumbled upon the following website. If you don't have the B54F3741 registry key under HKCU but you do have it under HKLM and you find references to Mcafee this should fix your problem.

I have found a resolution to this problem.

Once I did this - the problem went away immediately.

I did not have to mess around with my registry at all - my attempts to do so were a waste of time.

What you need to resolve this is to download and run MCPR.exe which is provided by McAfee.

I think that you can find it here:

or just google it.

You have to restart the system after running MCPR
