One of my Cisco partners was asked if VPN Client on the 800 series is still supported?
Especially will it be supported or developed with windows 8.

Cisco VPN client works well with Windows 8.
In case of the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 you have to reinstall the VPN client but it works without any problem even on 64bit OS.
You can switch to "next gen" Client (Anyconnect) in case your friend owns 870, 880 or 890 series router but additional licence is required: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/iosswrel/ps6537/ps6586/ps6657/product_data_sheet0900aecd80405e25.html

Hey Alan,
The VPN client is going currently under End of Life phase [EOL].

There will be no Windows 8 support. [ It might work but there will be no support]
Alternatives are:
Win7 or Win8 Ikev2 client - It would requires an ISR-G2
Anyconnect - It would requires an ISR-G2
Cheers
Olivier
