Hi,

I hope someone can help I've been struggling to find an answer to this.

We Bought 3x WAP551's recently but are having nothing but hassle with them. Half our devices won't connect or show low/weak signal even when only sat a few meters away. Other devices like my phone for example connect fine but speed performance is poor and it regularly disconnects and has to reconnect. It doesn't matter what options it seems i set, whether they're standalone or part of a cluster it makes no difference.

I tried enabling logging to see if it would help shed some light on the issue and got flooded with emails all the same thing from all 3 AP's which I've pasted below.

The firmware has been updated on all 3. Any suggestions on what could be wrong or I could try setting would be greatly appreciated

Hello parvalux1,

I am sorry the units are not performing as expected. There may be a few different issues going on, and I will try to address each of them. First thing I would like to verify is that the units are on firmware 1.2.0.2. Then, depending upon your network, could spanning-tree be a cause for the slowness? I have seen where, for some reason, the WAP becomes the spanning tree root and causes slow network connectivity. Can you verify what is the root of spanning-tree in your network?

Second, for the disconnects, in the new firmware 1.2.0.2, there is an option MFP under the SSID if the unit is using "N" speed. We have found disabling this feature has resolved quite a few disconnect issues. The way to set this to "Not Required" is to:

This option is located where you configure the SSIDs (so Wireless->Networks then there's a link under each SSID to "Show Details"), but it ONLY appears if you disable WPA-TKIP.

If it is set to "Capable" (the default) then the WAP will expect clients that advertise they support it to have to use it. If set to “Required” then only wireless clients that can use PMF will be allowed on this SSID. If set to “Not Required” – self-explanatory. I would set this setting to “Not Required” If they need TKIP enabled, just disable it first, make the change for MFP, and then set TKIP back to enabled.

They're running 1.2.0.2 yes.

Sadly I've only been here a few months so am unsure with the configuration of our switches, from what I've seen they're unmanaged (some very old) so would presume set to defaults as bar the 2 in the server room the rest haven't even got static IP's. No VLAN's setup (should this maybe be disabled on the AP's or will VLAN 1 make no difference?)

Spanning Tree Mode is enabled under the WDS Bridge settings, should i turn this off on the AP's?

I've applied the change to the Wireless settings, re-enabled the logs so waiting to see if that helps now and what comes through. :)

Hello,

Since you said the switches are unmanaged and old, it is probable they are not doing spanning-tree protocol. It sounds like they may be hubs, which could be causing undo traffic in your network. I would wait and see if the changes made have any effect on disconnects. One thing you may want try to identify the speed issue is to connect a PC to the same switch that an AP having speed issues is connected to and see if the PC is experiencing slowness also. If it does, it is somewhere downstream where the bottleneck is. Thanks.

Hi thanks again for your reply, still no luck i tried disabling spanning tree protocol on the AP's and now getting different errors and even worse reliability. atm no can even connect to them now or if you do get an IP it disconnects shortly after.

Really not impressed with these AP's, getting lots of grief at work and wishing i'd stuck with our cheapy TP-Links.

This is the new error i'm getting. It continues on like that constantly. The mac address listed is from the AP itself and is the same for all 3 AP email logs where it lists its own mac address.

It wasn't mentioned but if you have not tried already, let's try the second thing that Mr. Battisti mentioned.

1st, put spanning tree back to its original setting.

In the firmware 1.2.0.2, there is an option MFP under the SSID when the unit is using "N" speed. Set this to "Not Required". This option is located where you configure the SSIDs (so Wireless->Networks then there's a link under each SSID to "Show Details"), the option to change this setting ONLY appears if you disable WPA-TKIP. Set it to Not Required.

Sorry forgot to include the "Not Required" tick box was the 1st thing I tried & it didn't help.

To buy me more time I've now moved 2 of the WAP551's from my office and my managers to a less used area of the building on different switches and brought our WAP321's in here and the WiFi in my office is much better now, can actually stream videos and not get disconnected constantly which suggests to me its specifically the AP's with the issues and nothing to do with the switches they connected to.

We just bought these standalone from a re-seller so i sadly don't have a support contract to create a service request with. Thanks for the help I will just have to keep beating on them.

me to on a couple of WAP150s.

Is there a solution or should i just throw them away (or use as expensive wall decoration).

WAP551 - trying to deauthenticate to station, but not authenticated - Reason 3
