I have a 5508 with the HA SKU i need to attach as secondary to a primary 5508.

As for network connection, this will be on a 6509-E

1. the primary has 4 1Gb ports in a port channel(trunk) config, should I do the same for the secondary with at different port channel number

2. Should I make  the management ip and service ip the same as the primary or should i give it an ip in the same subnet

3. the primary has a service vlan and management vlan will it use the same

4. Both controllers have the same FUS, image, and WebAuth certification.

Darn, no answer yet.

Well I too have a 5508 HA question..

But I can answer yours.

Each unit needs 2 IP's from the segment and 1 for the Service port if you wish.

I usually put the redundancy-management port 1 up from the management port in the same segment.

as long as the 2 units are NOT in redundant mode, both management IP's will be alive and you can gui in.

once the pair are in redundant mode, the standby unit's management IP will be gone.  The active unit will always assume the Primary's management IP, the only one the AP's (and dns) know about.

You can access the Standby unit via its Service-port IP.

So, 1) both unit need the same port count because in the end, there only be 1 config.

2) don't duplicate IP's

3) Only the Primary caries a license that it shares with the HA box when married (linked) but everyone has its own IP.

4) good but I would expect the HA unit to inherit the primary's WebAuth..

See here for the setup:

And make sure you run at least 7.5, better 8.2 image.

Also mind Davids answer :)

For redundancy reasons, I would NOT connect the second WLC to the same switch (6500), unless this switch is anyway your single point of failure. If it's in VSS and you have two 6500, do NOT use the same port-channel!
