5520 WLC HA AP License sharing

Hi,

I have a 5520 WLC with 500 AP license running currently in live. I do have a spare 5520 WLC which has 650 AP license. 

Currently i have 450 APs and upgrading this to 750 APs (300+ new). Will HA works with these 2 WLCs and will APs be distributed amount WLCs?

Hi,

Are you looking to run HA SSO or HA N+1?

If HA SSO you need only licenses for 1 WLC. Second WLC will inherit the license count from primary controller.

If it is N+1, you need similar licenses in both WLC's. For example if you have 500+650 AP's across both controllers you need 1150 licenses in both WLC's to get the failover working correctly. But even without licenses you can build the HA cluster, but in case of failover lets say WLC with 650AP's failed, and on the N+1 WLC you have only 500 AP licenses and all 500 are used by AP's originally registered to it, then N+1 WLC will reject AP registrations.

Hi,

you need to be under 2 options as below.

1. use HA hardware with HA SKU for same WLC can use same license set from active WLC and no need to duplicate license

2. using another WLCs (not HA SKU) need separate licenses per WLC according to number of APs, you are planing to join with respective WLC

I'm planning to use SSO mode. 

If i configure it with SSO mode, will all 750APs will be registered with both the controllers. 500 in primary and 250 in secondary ?

Hi Karthik,

If you build HA SSO, then incase of failover secondary controller will inherit licenses from primary controller. you just need to configure the licenses in primary controller. So secondary will have the same number of licenses as primary. In your case since you have the entitlement to use 1150 AP adder licenses (as per your initial post WLC1=500 & WLC2=650)
