7921 and 7925 wireless phones on WLC 4404 not getting full config, TFTP error

Hi,

I have a strange issue, where 7921s/7925s work fine on APs on one WLC 4404 plugged into a 6500 switch in one building.

When the phones are using APs on another WLC 4404 plugged into a 6500 in the main MDF, the phones get registered but have TFTP config error and don't download the ringtones. They can get calls, etc fine.

Both 4404s and 6509 switches are on same verisons, and the config is nearly the same except for IP addresses on the VLANs for the WLC and 6500.

Both have 2 ports in port channel / LAG group, 6500 side is set to mode on with ip both distribution method (Cat OS).

We have replaced the WLC and moved it to another module in the main 6500 with no change. The trunk from the 6500 to the WLC only allows the 10 VLANs used on the WLC.

No errors on 6509 ports or WLC ports.

Any one have any ideas?

Are you using TFTP manually configured? or DHCP is providing TFTP IP address?

Is it the same DHCP and same SCOPE for both WLC.

Using DHCP, yes, the same TFTP server is used for both (Call Manager IP address).

Also tried manually setting TFTP on phone, and same... works on APs on the one WLC and 6509 but not the other.

Then there must be an ACL... is traffic hitting the TFTP? or is the return the one that fails? packet captures would be helpful.

If you do TFTP manually (with a pc)  does it gets to the TFTP?  IS THE SAME DHCP SCOPE FoR BOTH WLCs?

There are no ACLs, and traffic is getting to the TFTP server but seems to time out for some reason on the wireless devices on the one controller/APs.

The same VLAN for both and same DHCP scope/server covers both.

We did packet capture and the TFTP traffic is happening but doesn't show any errors, etc. We did notice some other traffic in the packet capture for other VLANs the controller wasn't set up for so trimmed the VLAN trunks to only allow the vlans used on the WLC and that traffic is now gone but this problem remains.

If we take the 7921/7925s to other part of complex on APs on other WLC everything works fine. We are going to try to rehome one of the APs to use the other WLC later today and see if that makes a difference to further troubleshoot this.

I am also working with TAC on this and both the switch and wireless teams there have not found anything yet.

There got to be an ewerror on the TFTP packet capture...

Can you please upload the packet capture..

Can you try doing a packet capture from that vlan from both WLCs to another TFTP on the CCM VLAN?

Can you please provide the case numbers?
