Is it possible that a 802.11n client to join to a 802.11ac AP configured with 80/160Mhz channels?

If yes, what is the behavior of the legacy client?

Not remotely possible.

Devices should be able to connect 802.11n even when you use 80/160 as the device will only use 20/40.  Don't know why you would use 80/160 because it uses up your channels and your devices need to support 80/160.  Stick to 20/40 so you have more overlapping channels and your RF would be cleaner.

My question is theoretical. I haven't tested it but I found some materials that state that a 802.11n clients are not able to connect to 80mhz at APs.

I have 80mhz running on my AP's at home and don't have issue with any 802.11n devices connecting to the 5ghz.

Keep in mind that 802.11ac is backward compatible with 802.11n.  I have even tried 160mhz just to test and I still had 802.11n clients connect on the 5ghz.  Again, I wouldn't use 80/160 in production.

Good luck!
