9800 17.9.3 APSP1 (CSCwe97460) and APSP3 (CSCwf67455)

Hi team,
I'm wondering whether it's needed to install APSP1 and APSP3 at the same time for the 17.9.3 release.
From what I read it's not explicitely stated in the download area, release notes or the "Recommended Cisco IOS XE Releases for Catalyst 9800 Wireless LAN Controllers" document.

In earlier releases (like 17.3.6) this was sometime explicetely stated.

So here's my problem:

APSP1 (CSCwe97460) and APSP3 (CSCwf67455) covers exactely the same AP models (AP Image Types), which can be verified using "show ap image file summary"

For the relevant AP models, APSP1 equals AP version 17.9.3.201; APSP3 equals AP version 17.9.3.203

From my understanding, the relevant APs can only run one software version (17.9.3.201 OR 17.9.3.203) - not both, right?

However, APSP1 and APSP3 covers different bug fixes. From the release notes, there is no overlapping of bug fixes.

So from my point of view, there are the following options

  • Install both, because the AP will use the fixes included in APSP1 and APSP3 (with the higher operational price of two AP reboots)
  • Only install APSP3, because APSP1 fixes are included in APSP3
  • Choose whether to install APSP1 OR APSP3 depending on what bugs need to be addresses in the deployment in question. One AP model can only use ONE version (in doubt the newest version is chosen).

From TAC:

APSP4 has only the ap3g3 image (i.e. Marvell Wave 2 - 2800/3800/4800/1560/IW6300 AP Platforms).  For that platform, it has the fix for the radar field notice as well as all earlier APSP fixes.

APSP3 has all AP-COS images (but lacks the radar fix for ap3g3.)

So :

  • if you have only ap3g3 APs, you only need APSP4
  • if you have no ap3g3 APs, you only need APSP3
  • if you have ap3g3s and other APs too, install both (installation order doesn't matter)

On the other hand, you can just run 17.9.4 on the WLC, all the above APSPs are already added on 17.9.4

Most probable , it would be advisable to confirm with TAC ,

@Johannes Luther, did you get an answer from TAC?

Now another SP (unnumbered, just "APSP") has been released for CSCwf84244 on 7/20.

Somewhat answered the question... the upgrade guide states:

"Again, it should be noted that if, for example, 3 model images were included in an APSP, then all future APSPs in that
release for any of these 3 AP images will contain all 3 of them. This would help subsequent APSPs to supersede older ones."

But, the 20-Jul APSP isn't numbered higher than the previous ones, so in this specific case, I'm still wondering. I can't open a TAC case right now, so hoping someone else has gotten an answer.

A very helpful command is "show ap image file summary" on the WLC regarding this.
