Regardless if the "description" of the SMU file is "hot" or "cold", always assume SMU upgrade will reboot the WLC.

All APSP will reboot the APs because it is applying a different software version to the AP.

@Leo Laohoo  Thanks for help. How do we know SMU file is hot or cold. Its emntion in any description.

Sometimes it will say "reboot required".

Again, always assume a reboot will require because it has been demonstrated many times that the description will say "does not require reboot" but it actually does.

Cisco has have a very poor track record in documentation that it can no longer be trusted nor considered trustworthy.

The SMU description should always tell you but as Leo says we have found (a few times already) that the SMU is incorrectly labelled "does not require reboot" even though it does reboot the controller.  So assume it always will reboot but if you have a lab environment then test it in your lab to confirm how it actually behaves.  There have been a few SMUs (not many) which did not require a reboot but most of them seem to need a reboot.

                                                  Usually there will not be complete Release Notes for an SMU but some note(s) are provided which may (...) contain that information ,

Hi,

Please read this document https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/ewc/17-13/config-guide/ewc_cg_17_13/smu.html as it clarify your query also read pre-download image option.

@Gaurav Kansal I don't see any query about pre-download?

But controller SMU only updates WLC code not APs so pre-download doesn't come into the equation for SMU.
APSP can be pre-downloaded but that is not what the question was about.
