Could someone please explain to me how the new access point software naming convention works?
c1140-rcvk9w8-tar.152-2.JB.tar
I am trying to determine which WLC version support the above software.

that image is the 'recovery' image, rcv.
So long as you load the recovery image to the AP, or order the AIR-CAP etc it doesn't matter what image you have.
When the AP joins the WLC, it will do a check to see what version it has versus what the controller is holding. IF there is a mismatch, the AP will download it's new image from the WLC.
Same thing when you upgrade, you only have to upgrade the WLC and the APs will pull their image from the WLC so it has the correct image.
HTH,
Steve

Any software that has rcv is supported on the WLC. v15 I believe is for v7.4, but I think not will work for any. The AP will eventually get the code from the WLC.

Hi Maurice,
Most Wireless interoperability problems stem from the hardware as opposed to the software (as the software is much easier to change than the hardware!). You might do well to keep a copy of this Cisco Wireless Compatibility Matrix in your browser shortcuts...
